The machines covered by the specification are intended to perform all of the milling operations on wing skins, integral panels, complex forgings, extrusions, etc., of ferrous and/or non-ferrous materials for the Aerospace Industry.

Purpose

This specification provides a standard for the manufacture, performance, inspection and procurement of a series of numerically controlled, wide bed, vertical spindle, milling machines. These machines will have skin or profile milling capability or both. This standard lists minimum requirements and is not to limit design advances. This specification, as written, depicts a traveling gantry machine but does not preclude a traveling table machine.
