As part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Program (CERP), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), in conjunction with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), have initiated pilot studies to evaluate potential treatment options for an Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project that includes hundreds of ASR wells. Treatment systems will be designed to treat surface water prior to injection into groundwater storage zones with ultimate capacity approaching 1.5 billion gallons of water per day. One of the treatment approaches considered consists of bank filtration followed by ozonation and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection. This process combination offers the improved reliability of a multiple barrier approach while maintaining cost and operational efficiencies due to the synergistic nature of the individual unit processes. This paper provides a summary of treatability study results, engineering analysis, and cost estimates. Includes figures.
