This paper describes how the California Department of Health Services became involved in N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) shortly after conducting monitoring for perchlorate in groundwaters near sites that used solid rocket fuel. A new laboratory method had to be developed after the Department established an action level of 0.002 ug/L, which was at least an order of magnitude lower than existing detection levels. An occurrence study was conducted and several possible causes for the presence of NDMA were postulated. The Department has approved several ultraviolet (UV) treatment facilities for NDMA. The Department revised the action level to 0.01 ug/L. The Department is concerned over other nitrosoamine compounds, but laboratory methodology needs to be developed. Includes 7 references, tables.
