The purpose of developing a Cryptosporidium Detection Action Plan was to provide a framework from which to proceed in the event of an elevated Cryptosporidium count in raw or finished water, or elevated cryptosporidiosis incidence in communities served by San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) drinking water. The development and the implementation of the plan was and is a collaborative effort between the water utility (SFPUC) and the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH). The need to develop a formally adopted plan had significance for San Francisco for the following reasons: 85% of the water supply originates from highly protected watersheds in the high Sierra and is unfiltered; San Francisco has a relatively high immunocompromised population; and, Cryptosporidium outbreaks in other public water systems have underscored a need to be fully prepared with a formal plan for action. Topics covered include: infectivity issues; testing issues; timing issues; background occurrence; and, action levels. Includes 17 references, figures, appendices.
