There has been an increased interest in the content of water treatment plant residuals and the proper disposal of these materials. One aspect that may not have been a focus until recently at many locations is naturally occurring radioactive material or NORM. The process of removing trace minerals from water can actually concentrate the minerals in the media used to remove them. This media can create higher concentrations of NORM or TENORM - technically enhanced, naturally occurring radioactive materials. Many states have established rules and regulations for the treatment, handling, and disposal of NORM and TENORM materials. This paper outlines some of the concerns, requirements, and disposal options that water treating facilities may have to consider.
