This powerpoint presentation outlines an effort by the Kauai Grove Farm Project to convert from groundwater to surface water as the sugar plantation itself was converted from agricultural use to a new housing development. The potential for new developments was restricted by a limited groundwater supply in the Lihue/Puhi area of the island of Kauai in Hawaii. In February 2004 a partnership was created between Grove Farm and the Kauai Department of Water (DOW) that resulted in a water purchase agreement where Grove Farm proposed to take the lead in building a Surface Water Purification Facility. In response to transitional concerns about the affect, if any, that new surface water will have on a distribution system conditioned for decades to groundwater, Grove Farm Company and Kauai DOW commissioned a study to provide real-time potential impacts to customers in their homes, and examine conditions of release of galvanized service line tuberculation. Topics addressed include: plantation home test site; testing and sampling; six phases of the test schedule; field water quality results; corrosion inhibitor description; purification facility process; and, implementation of study recommendation to feed inhibitor results in successful transition. Includes tables, figures.
