This paper discusses the importance of knowledge management (KM) and knowledge retention because of the coming brain drain due to the Baby Boomers retiring. The paper cites an AwwaRF research project, "Strategies to Help Drinking Water Utilities Ensure Effective Retention of Knowledge", that defines effective strategies, tools and techniques that will enable utilities to implement knowledge retention and reuse projects, based on an understanding of the key drivers, critical success factors, barriers, costs, and benefits for utilities. The paper goes on to cover topics that include: the importance of KM; KM Concepts and Approaches; Utility Management Knowledge Needs; Steps to Address KM; and, KM Tools and Methods.
