This powerpoint presentation outlines a study to develop a technology to remove and eliminate perchlorate from contaminated water. Specific objectives were to: investigate the adsorption and desorption characteristics of perchlorate on granular activated carbon (GAC); to check the various operational conditions by batch (isotherm) and column studies, with the goal of using the smallest amount of regenerant to recover the highest amount of perchlorate; and, to chemically reduce perchlorate into harmless chloride. Process overview included: perchlorate adsorption on GAC; perchlorate desorption using NaBH4 as regenerant; and, perchlorate destruction using in-situ produced nano-size iron particles. Parameters for desorption studies of perchlorate using NaBH4 are given, along with the pilot set up in an Escondido, California, facility.
