Recent droughts in the United Kingdom have highlighted the significance of the need for water efficiency, leakage control and reduce the demand for water. At the same time there are proposals for significant housing development throughout the United Kingdom some of which are planned within regions with scarce available water resources. These factors have resulted in new guidelines for housing development that take account of the issues surrounding climate change, carbon footprint and water conservation. The paper outlines common themes of the water demand management components of two urban development projects in the southeast of England. One project was a multidisciplinary integrated water management study, the objectives of which were to review the current problems with the water environment, establish the key constraints to growth that might arise as a result of the proposed development and to identify demand management strategies to accommodate the proposed expansion. Includes 9 references, tables, figures.
