The second generation intranet is an organization's competitive edge. The focus of this paper is on organizational results that can be achieved with intranet technology, not just better software. First generation intranet technology is already miles ahead of the ability of most organizations to utilize it. This paper begins by discussing organizations' abilities to utilize intranet technology. The paper then addresses the issue of increasing competitiveness by developing the ability of people to use intranet technology and the policies that inhibit this. The effective utilization of first generation intranet technology is illustrated by three examples and various aspects of the implementation of second generation intranet technology are explored.
