Public utilities have been under increasing pressure to measure up to the performance standards of the private sector. As a result, many new management approaches and strategies, popular in the private sector, are now being applied in the utility industry. In the context of equipment maintenance, utilities around the world are now applying new maintenance strategies to increase the reliability of assets while decreasing overall maintenance expenditures. A common aspect of the many different maintenance strategies is the use of Predictive Maintenance (PdM) technologies to detect potential failures. PdM is the science of detecting potential failures through the sampling and measuring of identifiable conditions. This paper provides an overview of a nine-step process to build and operate an efficient and effective PdM program. Ultimately, it allows the maintenance professional to review and understand all critical considerations before investing in a predictive maintenance program. Includes figures.
