This paper describes a database that was developed for use by a consulting engineering firm for all treatment facility design projects. That database manages data traditionally kept in equipment data sheets, but also allows for linking of electronic catalog files, digital photographs, and other supporting documentation. The database may be accessed directly through an application interface or by using a web browser. The design of the database allows for the automatic generation of valve, piping, control device, and equipment schedules used in the contract documents. This automatic generation allows changes to equipment numbering or naming to be reflected in the various contract documents, even late in the design process. A table of drawing references for each piece of equipment is populated during the Quality Control (QC) review. Using this, queries run during the QC process will quickly show inconsistencies between the drawings and specifications. Furthermore, the data are quickly accessible during the review of shopdrawings to ensure that what was specified is actually installed. Next, the design information may be easily integrated into the electronic O&M manual, through the use of standardized database queries. Finally, the equipment data may be easily migrated from this database, to the owner's CMMS or SCADA databases, to ensure that the new equipment is reflected in the utility's databases immediately after startup. The use of such an application improves the quality of the contract documents and speeds the migration of design information from the plant designers to the utility personnel.
