Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is an alternative oxidant to chlorine for the treatment of drinking water. ClO2 must be produced on site by the oxidation of chlorite ion or the reduction of chlorate ion. Each generation technology ultimately produces ClO2; however, the final product (composition and purity) can be very different. Discussions on ClO2 purity have typically focused on chlorine. Other potential impurities include chlorite ion, chlorate ion, acid, hydrogen peroxide, and in some cases perchlorate ion. Experimental data are presented to show similarities and potential differences in product composition. Includes 39 references, tables, figures.
