Riverbank filtration (RBF) refers to the natural filtration of microbial matter through an aquifer matrix of sand and gravel. Before this study, RBF had gained only limited acceptance as a primary filtration process for Cryptosporidium removal to comply with the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule. Recently, USEPA and the Central Wyoming Regional Water System (CWRWS) in Casper, through a process of negotiation and continued cooperation, developed an evaluation study to demonstrate removal of Cryptosporidium using RBF. The study demonstrated that aquifers composed of sand and gravel can remove Cryptosporidium-sized particles as effectively as engineered filtration systems, including slow sand filtration and conventional treatment.
