A leadership assessment analysis administered nationwide to nearly 30,000 participants measured the intention or energy put forth by managers toward 22 leadership and management behaviors. The results of that analysis were then used as a yardstick against which the results of a study of the effectiveness of more than 300 utility managers were measured. The article discusses four patterns that surfaced from the data which, according to the authors, signal that many utility leaders will be unprepared to deal with the coming tide of changes in business operations and the workforce. Utility managers must delegate the day-to-day operations, develop their leadership team, and guide long-term organizational goal attainment. Includes 7 references, tables, figures.
