This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the New Bedford, Massachusetts, Environmental Management System (EMS) and Energy Management process. Program background is outlined, along with challenges that included staffing resources and managing an EMS on top of the existing process, not along-side, which still required resources. What worked well: environmental awareness by all staff; increased recycling - office and yard; planning process has become structured; incorporated into budget cycle; used for technical considerations - fluoridation; and, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requirement for energy use reduction has lead to significant cost savings. Presentation summary includes the following: structured approach to energy management program initiative selection; consistent with EMS program - internal alignment; consistent with City initiatives - external alignment; strengthen performance in EUM attributes; mitigate or reverse energy cost increases; and, contributes to a more sustainable operation.
