In recent years, several new treatment technologies, including membranefiltration, have been proposed to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources(WDNR). The goal of this paper is to describe the process through which the state regulatory agency approved several membranefiltration plants. At present, there are two operating membrane filtration plantsin Wisconsin with two more under construction. These include a 14 million gallonper day (MGD) US Filter/Memcor plant at Kenosha and a 10 MGD ultrafiltration (UF)Filter/Memcor plant at Manitowoc. Both use Lake Michigan as a source. A 18 MGD(winter)/24 MGD (summer) Koch ultrafiltration plant at Appleton is scheduled tobe in service by the summer of 2001. Appleton uses Lake Winnebago as a source andpretreatment will include lime softening and GAC contactors. A 2 MGD USFilter/Memcor plant at Ashland using Lake Superior water is also scheduled to be inservice by the summer of 2001. Includes figures.
