Scottsdale, Arizona is a desert community with an established history of utilizing membrane systems to meet its water quality and treatment goals. The community is broadening its application of this technology by expanding one facility, and adding two more membrane treatment systems. Scottsdale believes in membrane technology because membranes produce a predictable, consistently high quality product, and shifts operational responsibilities from water quality to productivity issues. This shift aids staff in meeting the myriad of water quality requirements that have been imposed upon utilities over the last few years, and in most cases, those that will be applied in the near future. This paper outlines Scottsdale's application of membrane systems by providing a summary of the first three years of operation at Scottsdale's Water Campus, discussing pilot testing, membrane procurement and design of the Chaparral WTP, and pilot testing, design, and water quality issues associated with the addition of reverse osmosis to its central groundwater treatment facility (CGTF). Includes tables, figures, appendix.
