Pilot plant experiments were conducted using three different membrane systems for micro and ultrafiltration of high levels of oxidized iron and manganese. Three sets of performance tests were conducted to evaluate whether each system could meet the goals of chemical clean frequency no less than 30 days, 97% minimum recovery, iron less than 0.1 mg/L and manganese less than 0.05 mg/L. Two different oxidants, ozone and permanganate were used upstream of the membranes. Preliminary results show that all three membrane systems effectively removed the iron and manganese when the oxidant was optimally dosed. Includes tables, figures.
