This paper reviews the case histories of membrane facilities in different implementation stages to identify specific areas where technical advances had a significant impact. After noting the lessons learned from past experiences, the authors identify strategies to position membrane projects to benefit from ongoing technical development. These examples show that the rapid technological evolution of membrane systems can significantly impact a variety of project stakeholders and can arise during many project phases.
