Pure polyamide and zeolite-polyamide nanocomposite membranes were synthesized by the interfacial polymerization of m-phenylenediamine and trimesoly chloride on a porous polysulfone support membrane. All synthesized membranes exhibited reverse osmosis-like water flux and selectivity. Zeolite-polyamide nanocomposite membranes showed higher selectivity and improved hydrophilicity. In addition, when the zeolite nanoparticles were subject to ion-exchange with silver ions, the nanocomposite membranes acquire biocidal properties. These hydrophilic and antibiotic membranes may be highly desirable for use in desalination and wastewater reclamation. Includes 4 references, tables, figures.
