This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of a facility planning project by the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) for a 70 MGD integrated membrane treatment plant treating turbid river water with high TDS and hardness. The project would make use of water rights for the Virgin and Muddy Rivers upstream of Lake Mead to supply 70,000 AFY. The proposed project included in-stream diversion structures, an off-stream storage reservoir, water conveyance facilities, a water treatment plant, and support facilities. Topics presented include: water quality; treatment objectives; process selection; facility description; preliminary layout; and, process energy requirements. Presentation conclusions indicate the following: water quality from the Virgin and Muddy Rivers is challenging for treatment (turbid, brackish, and hard); elaborate pretreatment to maximize reverse osmosis (RO) recovery is necessary; brine management requires the largest land use (1400 Acres) vs treatment plant (120 Acres); treatment objectives can be achieved but cost and energy usage are high; and, pilot testing is recommended to verify assumptions and optimize design to reduce cost. Includes tables, figures.
