This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the drivers for watershed-based performance standards. Project background information includes a brief overview of BWWB, the largest water utility in the state of Alabama, providing water to over 675,000 customers. It operates two reservoirs and two "run-of the river" water sources, with development mostly prevalent in the Cahaba River/Lake Purdy watershed. Challenges for watershed protection are presented, and the approach, or technical basis of the plan included: evaluate present operation at the Shades Mountain filter plant relative to historical/existing water quality conditions; evaluate point and non-point sources that drive reservoir water quality (WQ); determine changes in water quality that will significantly increase operation and maintenance costs and/or necessitate major capital improvements; evaluate reservoir WQ (assimilative capacity); and, develop watershed protection policy that minimizes the risk of the threshold identified in step 2 being exceeded. Present operational costs, treatment plant impacts, basis for watershed protection, watershed protection policy focus, and applicability are all presented. Includes tables, figures.
