This paper summarizes Chapter 13 "Integrated Resource Planning" in the new second edition of AWWA manual M50. Integrated Resource Planning or IRP is viewed as a process to tie all of the individual elements of water resources planning together. A model IRP process is described to provide a structure for preparing an integrated resource plan. The major differences between conventional water resource planning and IRP include giving equal consideration to demand management and new supply development, consideration of risk and reliability with shortage management as an option, extensive public participation in the process. Selection of an integrated resource plan should consider cost-effectiveness, supply reliability, environmental impacts, financing, and public acceptability. Includes 5 references, tables, figure.
