The feasibility of using instrumentation for the detection of coliforms and E.coli in water was assessed in this study. Three instruments were examined: the Colifast Microdetector, a hand held device; the Colifast Laboratory Analyzer, a laboratory analyzer; and, the Colifast AT-Line Microbial Monitor, an on-line detector. Early studies indicate that the hand held device may be useful for detecting high levels of contamination within 3-6 hrs. and may also be useful for on site testing. The laboratory and on line instruments may be useful for process control and can accurately detect 20 coliforms in 10ml of sample within 11 hrs. Includes 4 references, table, figures.
