The Las Vegas Valley Water District (LVVWD) is developing an Enhanced Water Quality Monitoring Plan (Enhanced Monitoring Plan) to optimize monitoring coverage for regulatory compliance and system protection. Planning criteria are developed to ensure uniformity of the sampling stations over the entire distribution system and population, to cover developing and remote service areas, and to provide a traceable relationship to each water supply source and the residence time for all seasonal operating conditions. The Enhanced Monitoring Plan promotes the use of water quality data to support facility planning and operational efforts for water quality enhancement. Integration of the water quality monitoring data with the results from a combined hydraulic and water quality model, and with other information captured in the geographic information system (GIS) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, provides significant and practical benefits. These benefits include improved water quality model calibration, timely emergency response to potential water quality threats, and intelligent feedback for future facility planning. The Enhanced Monitoring Plan is described with examples that illustrate the resulting benefits. Includes table, figures.
