This slide presentation outlines practical experiences of implementing ultraviolet (UV) disinfection in the Region of Waterloo (ROW). It begins with an overview of the Region of Waterloo water district, and then outlines points on groundwater UV that include: rationale for implementation of groundwater UV; description of groundwater UV; and, the future of Groundwater UV at ROW. The Mannheim WTP (MWTP) UV system is presented in terms of a rational for implementation of surface water UV. Topics covered include: ROW UV commissioning realities for groundwater and surface water; and, MWTP UV Disinfection - the realities of water treatment in Ontario. Conclusions and Lessons Learned consists of 8 Things to be Aware Of that include: Difficulties with Developing Control Logic; Calibration of Secondary UV Equipment (UVT analyzers); Expenses incurred with carrying spare parts; Location: electrical components require specific space and atmospheric conditions; redundancy and stand-by issues Lamp Breakage, necessity to have an SOP in place and be prepared for Hg cleanup; the need for routine lamp inspections and regular sleeve cleaning; and, updated method of tracking lamp hours on supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.
