This slide presentation outlines a study on the characterization of manganese oxide coated filter media from nine water treatment plants. The scope of the presentation includes: oxide coating (mg metal/gram of media); size and uniformity (sieve analysis); specific surface area (m2 per/gram of media); and, Mn uptake capacity. Conclusions were: Metal Coatings - >0.01 to 120 mg Mn per gram of media, present on sand and anthracite media, significant variation, comprised of Fe, Al and Ca, consistent ratios; and, Metal Coatings - Mn Uptake increases with Mn coating, "diminishing returns", rough, porous nature, high surface area, inaccessible adsorption sites, encapsulated particles, Mn uptake as-is = 70% of regenerated.
