This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of reducing total trihalomethane (TTHM) and haloacetic acid (HAA5) concentrations for Stage 2 compliance, and using filter adsorbers for Stage 2 compliance. The City of Birmingham, Alabama's experience with conducting a year-long pilot study to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing granular activated carbon (GAC) filter adsorbers to reduce disinfection byproduct (DBP) levels. Potential GAC implementation strategies considered by the Mohawk Valley Water Authority (MVWA) in New York state are presented. A summary of study results revealed that: under the right circumstances, GAC filter adsorbers can be an effective Stage 2 compliance strategy; much less expensive than post-filter contactors; avoid potential unintended consequences w/chloramines; Birmingham, Alabama - biofiltration without pre-ozone; and, MVWA - enhanced total organic carbon (TOC) removal for limited periods. Includes tables, figures.
