This powerpoint presentation begins by stating the regulatory drivers for membranes and ultraviolet (UV). Topics covered in the presentation include: regulatory requirements for design; monitoring requirements; operational challenges; Case 1: Synergistic Surface Water Plant Design; and, Case 2: High Recovery Plant Design. Project summary includes: membranes and UV represent best available technologies to comply with LT2 requirements; although they provide the same benefit, their combined use in a WTP provides real synergies in reducing maintenance requirements for both membrane and UV systems; designing UV for higher doses allows potential for membrane system operation at lower LRVs; using dedicated UV on secondary membrane permeate provides disinfection equivalency; and, utilities should work with State regulatory agencies to discuss implementation.
