The objective of this powerpoint presentation was optimization of biofiltration with respect to removal of taste and odor (T&O) compounds in order to understand the contribution of biodegradation and adsorption under realistic operational conditions. The approach involved: comparing adsorbing media granular activated carbon(GAC) with nonadsorbing media (expanded clay, EC); Two Phases: biomass concentration - constant over bed depth / low temperature and varying with depth / high temperature; and, suppress microbial activity. Summary and conclusions were that: bench-scale experiments on biodegradation / adsorption removal of MIB and geosmin were carried out in bench scale columns; from the first set of experiments a simple model descriminating between adsorption and biodegradation was developed; and, the model was verified by an independent experiment at different temperature and different biomass concentration. Includes figures.
