As the scientific community continues to develop, evaluate, and validate methods for increasingly risky biological contaminants, the decision to use surrogates needs to be based on the goals of each study, types of surrogates available (e.g., attenuated strains, other species within the genus), and the identified study-specific factors. Each study should strike a balance between the science of the method and the risk to laboratory workers.
