The dependence of particle size on granular activated carbon (GAC) capacity is assessed when dissolved organic matter (DOM) is present. It is found that even though the proportional diffusivity rapid small-scale column test results in equal surface loading of DOM, the fouling is not equal. The reduction in capacity due to competition from DOM is dependent on particle size, and may be proportional to particle size. Larger particles were found to foul more. Pore blockage is used to explain this phenomena. Includes 10 references, table, figures.
