Coagulation and lime softening unit processes are typically used to remove dissolved organic matter (DOM) and hardness from raw waters. However, a combination of cation and anion exchange resins could potentially accomplish the same removals simultaneously in a single unit process. In this work, anionic magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) resin, which has been shown to effectively remove DOM in previous research, and a newly developed cationic MIEX resin are used to treat raw water classified as groundwater under the influence of surface water. DOM and hardness removal in raw water treated with only cation or anion MIEX resin was compared to removals achieved with combined ion exchange treatment. From these results, it is concluded that combined ion exchange is an effective treatment process for simultaneous removal of DOM and hardness. Includes 9 references, tables, figures.
