Ceramic membrane performance was evaluated on two natural source waters in Texas (Brazos River and Trinity River) with significantly variable raw water quality. The source waters are high color, high organic and high turbidity water and can be classified as eutrophic in nature. Ceramic membrane treatability was also evaluated for spent filter backwash stream and lagoon recycle stream combined with spent filter backwash and sludge blowdown. The performance was evaluated for removal of particulates, organics and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) precursors. The Brazos River bench-scale experiments were performed in cross-flow filtration mode, while the other source waters were tested at pilot scale in dead-end filtration mode. A schematic of the apparatus used in the cross flow filtration experiments, and the experimental set-up for dead-end filtration are provided. Includes figures.
