This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the organization "Ideas Beyond Borders", and the collaboration with KWR of the Netherlands. Previous work on the predation by natural zooplankton from SSF on Cryptosporidium oocysts in laboratory conditions is presented, along with a literature review of the significance of higher organisms in drinking water. Research objectives were to assess the significance of zooplankton for transport of pathogenic or indicator microorganisms through water treatment by assessing the role of predation in the transport of protozoan (oo)cysts in granular filters, and by finding evidence for the internalization of fecal bacteria in environmental zooplankton through water treatment. Topics presented include: the role of predation in transport and fate of protozoan (oo)cysts in pilot-scale granular activated carbon (GAC) filters; analysis of effluent water samples; and, zooplankton monitoring in a full-scale water treatment plant. Conclusions are provided for the internalization and transport in granular filtration. Includes tables, figures.
