This slide presentation outlines information on the Water Infrastructure Security Improvements (WISE) project. The three organizations involved with the project, and their respective phases of the project, include: the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), responsible for online contaminant monitoring; the American Water Works Association (AWWA), responsible for physical security for water utilities; and, the Water Environment Federation (WEF), responsible for physical security for wastewater and storm water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) provided funding for the project. The three phases of the project that include: Phase I, voluntary interim guidelines; Phase II, training; and, Phase III, incorporate into standards. Specific topics include: implementing water system security; developing a balanced plan; security legislation; Bioterrorism Act; Patriot and Homeland Security Acts; intelligence reform and terrorism prevention; Homeland Security Presidential Directives; ongoing AWWA security efforts; ongoing USEPA efforts; water sentinel; the integrated security triangle; ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) efforts; security standards; NDWAC Water Security Working Group; and, Water Sector Coordinating Council.
