The City of Sioux City and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) entered into an agreement in the spring of 2000 to evaluate the effectiveness of the Sioux City water treatment system in particle filtration. This system includes not only the filtration processes within the treatment plant, but filtration by sediments underlying and adjacent to the Missouri River. Quantifying the effectiveness could reduce filtration requirements within the city's treatment process and ultimately reduce construction, operation, and maintenance costs for treatment plant upgrades. This project entailed a ten-month-long study completed in June 2001 of ground and surface water sampling and water quality testing at seven sampling locations within the multi-well system. The seven sampling points include the Missouri River; a collector well within the city's Riverfront Wellfield; three of the collector well's laterals screened in the Missouri River alluvium; raw water consisting of water derived from all wells within the Riverfront Wellfield (also screened within Missouri River alluvium); and, finished water. Includes table.
