This paper discusses an innovative, fouling-resistant membrane technology for the treatment of industrial wastewater containing both dissolved and suspended contaminants. A Vibratory Shear-Enhanced membrane Process, VSEP, was integrated into a conventional chemical coagulation process to efficiently remove both dissolved arsenic and particles of gallium-arsenide (GaAs). Similar challenging waste streams exist in drinking water treatment such as reverse osmosis (RO) reject recovery and filter backwash reclamation. This paper presents the results of several years of system operation at the Freescale Semiconductor facility in Tempe, Arizona, and by corollary, provides insight into possible applications in the drinking water arena. Includes figure.
