The objective of this study was to assess the effects of secondary disinfectants on internal corrosion and water quality in copper piping under stagnant conditions. In particular, this study evaluated the effects of free chlorine on copper release under a range of corrosion inhibition conditions. This consisted of bench scale studies that compared copper corrosion in the presence and absence of chlorine. Further this project also explored the effects of copper corrosion exposed to chlorinated drinking water under stagnant conditions on disinfectant byproduct (DBP) formation. Results revealed that free chlorine reduced copper corrosion; however, the copper that was released facilitated the formation of chlorinated disinfectant byproducts. Includes 17 references.
