In recent years there have been growing concerns about the occurrence of antibiotics in the environment due to their potential adverse effect on ecosystem and human health. Methods were developed for the analysis of sulfonamide antibiotics in raw drinking waters using solid phase extraction and LC-UV detection. The method of standard addition was used for quantification. Sulfonamides were tentatively detected in some raw water samples. Meanwhile, LC-MS/MS methods were developed for positive identification and quantification of sulfonamides in water. In addition, a chlorination study was performed to assess the removal of a representative sulfonamide and efforts were made to identify the chlorination byproducts. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
