The objectives of this slide presentation include: explore steam treatment for enlargement of carbon pores and enhanced dissolved natural organic matter (DOM) removal; test the performance of the modified granular activated carbon (GAC) under typical drinking water treatment conditions; and, evaluate the effect of carbon modification on disinfection byproduct (DBP) control. Materials and methods included: GAC:HD3000 (HD), A coal-based steam-activated carbon; high temperature steam treatment (HD-S21, HD-S37, HD-S45); Myrtle Beach and Spartanburg raw and treated DOM collected with reverse osmosis (RO) isolation; isotherm experiments; Rapid Small Scale Column Tests (RSSCTs) (EBCT=10 min); THM and HAA formation measurements; and, resin fractionation. Includes tables, figures.
